First Swings in Spain: The Trip That Started It All
PGA Catalunya Resort — March 4, 2023
There are golf trips… and then there are the ones that change everything.
This was that trip.
Touchdown in Spain
March 4, 2023.
First time teeing it up in Spain. First time at PGA Catalunya Resort. And honestly—no idea what to expect.
The crew was a mix:
-
A few guys from work
-
A couple new faces I had just met
-
And the kind of energy you only get when nobody really knows how the trip is going to go
That’s usually when the best ones happen.
First Look at Catalunya
Pulling up to the course, you could feel it immediately—this wasn’t your average round.
Golden light stretching across the fairways.
Perfectly framed trees lining every hole.
A calm, almost cinematic stillness… like the course was waiting for us.
And then the sun started dropping.
That glow you only get late in the day—soft, golden, unreal. The kind of light that makes everything feel bigger than it is.
The Round
We didn’t play perfect golf.
Not even close.
But that wasn’t the point.
There were flushed irons, sure—but also:
-
Tee shots that found places they definitely shouldn’t
-
Putts that “broke at the end” (they didn’t)
-
And enough questionable yardage calls to keep things interesting
The lies?
Yeah… they were juicy.
But somewhere between the laughs, the chirping, and the shared disbelief after a few shots… something clicked.
The Moment
At one point, I just stopped and looked out across the course.
The sun hanging low.
The shadows stretching long across the fairway.
The kind of view that makes you forget your score completely.
That’s when it hit me—
This is why we do it.
Not for the perfect rounds.
Not for the numbers.
But for moments like this.
More Than Just a Trip
What started as a random mix of guys turned into something else entirely.
That trip built:
-
Friendships
-
Traditions
-
And a reason to keep planning the next one
We’ve been doing golf trips ever since.
Different courses. Different countries. Same energy.
For Tim
This one means more now.
Tim was part of it. Part of the laughs, the rounds, the stories that still get told today.
And like every great golf trip, his presence didn’t end when the round did.
We still talk about him.
Still bring up his shots.
Still hear his voice in the banter.
Every trip since… he’s still there with us in some way.
This one’s for you, Tim. RIP.
Final Thoughts
Some rounds fade.
Some trips blur together.
But every now and then, you get one that sticks.
The first trip to Spain.
The start of something bigger.
The kind of day that turns into years of stories.
That’s what Juicy Lies is all about.
Juicy Lies.
Play for the memories.
